Transgender people are people whose assigned gender at birth does not match what gender they feel most comfortable identifying as and being referred to; this includes non-binary (identifying outside the typical binary of gender, male and female) and binary identification. I was actually reading up on this topic this morning, and I found some very interesting stuff. This is a great topic to talk about, but unfortunately, I feel like for youth it is sort of glanced over by schools and even parents. I’m very pleased to see a post like this here. Well done!

Thank you! Schools and parents do tend to ignore problems with gender dysphoria and/or lack of it. I feel that it would probably be most painful for parents to ignore their child’s feelings and distress because in popular media, parents are the people you can count on. Leelah Alcorn is an example of intense neglect, abuse, and oppression from a transgender girl’s parents when she came out. I recommend reading up on Leelah’s story, though it is rather dark, so maybe avoid researching her story if darker topics trigger you. Otherwise, it is a very important topic to learn about and a topic that I believe many people should learn about. I might write about it in the future too if you would prefer to see it summarized on this platform than finding her story on your own. Let me know :]

Wow. I just read about that. That is crazy. I generally can handle darker topics. In fact, they are probably what interests me most. It is terrible to know that this kind of stuff does happen.
